20th Vox Feminae Festival, May 11th at 7 PM, Kaptol Boutique Cinema
The feature-length experimental-fiction debut by director and screenwriter Maja Čule, Electronic Witches (2026), will have its Croatian premiere as part of the 20th Vox Feminae Festival on Monday, May 11th, at Kaptol Boutique Cinema (Theater 2) starting at 7 PM.
The plot follows Neda (Nora Vorfi) who, after arriving in New York, faces a search for stability and connection while simultaneously maintaining a strained, online-mediated relationship with her father (Milivoj Beader) back in Croatia. During a late-night internet session, she encounters the queer cyber-feminist collective “Electronic Witches,” which was active in Zagreb during the 1990s. Their existence soon turns into an obsession, and her search moves from virtual space into the physical world.
The film blends elements of a personal story with contemporary digital mythologies, drawing on the author’s long-standing interest in early internet activism, female empowerment through technology, and the questioning of temporal boundaries. Through an atmospheric and visually deliberate approach, Čule builds a space between online and offline reality, raising questions about community, desire, and the possibilities of connection in a fragmented digital age.
The film had its preview screening on April 28th in New York City at the Anthology Film Archives.
