Grubić’s multimedia practice from the late 1990s to the present spans a range of formats, from text and photography to performance and interventions in public space. Around twenty works will be presented in Maribor, showing the different ways in which the artist moves beyond the gallery and engages directly with the public.
Public space is an important part of his practice. His work addresses the society and period that shaped it: the social changes of the 1990s, transition and privatization, the consequences of war, as well as questions of individual responsibility and the possibility of social change.
Grubić often works outside the gallery, using different forms of civil disobedience, agitation and direct communication with the public. In this way, artistic practice becomes part of public space and everyday life.
„Gestures of Activation” continues the tradition of historical avant-garde and conceptual art practices of the 1960s and 1970s, which questioned the boundaries of artistic space and the relationship between art and society.
First presented in 2024 at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, „Gestures of Activation” now comes to Maribor following its presentation in Rijeka and Skopje.
