The World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb (June 8–13) is hosting an auteur retrospective for Marko Meštrović, featuring five works from the 2006–2025 period, personally selected by the artist to represent his work. The retrospective will take place on Friday, June 12, starting at 6:00 PM at the MM Centre in Zagreb.
Meštrović is one of the first authors of the new generation of successors to the Zagreb School of Animated Film from the late 1990s and early 2000s. As Animafest’s artistic director Daniel Šuljić points out, he is characterized by “long-term stylistic consistency, situated at the intersection of comic noir, Krležian poetics, and introspective spirituality.”
The 47-minute program will feature the films:
SILENCIUM, 2006, 10′
NO SLEEP WON’T KILL YOU, 2010, 9′
TRIP, 2017, 10’40”
LEVITATION, 2014, 8’07”
HOW, 2025, 8’47”
Marko Meštrović, is one of the pioneering new generation filmmakers – Zagreb School’s heirs – which began to emerge in the late 1990s and early 2000s on the animation scene. This retrospective is an insight into a part of the work by the author’s own choice, the selection he wanted to present himself with. Meštrović also boasts an ongoing stylistic consistency, somewhere between noir comic book, Krleža’s poetics and introspective spirituality.
